Cave de Hunawihr's 'Rosacker' Riesling Grand Cru has a light yellow colour, with an elegant silver tint. On the nose, it has delicate nuances of lime and grapefruit, followed by a complex and fresh palate with aromatic hints of citrus fruits and zesty finish. Its well-balanced composition of acidity and minerality will delight your palate.  This should still be fantastic and likely improved over the course of the next decade and most likely beyond.

Pair Cave de Hunawihr, Riesling Grand Cru `Rosacker` with all kinds of seafood, cheese boards and Asian food.  It will pair very nicely with spicy food but more with aromatic than heat.

Critic Review

Decanter Magazine: 92Pts

"The 110 members of this co-op farm 200ha in the Haut-Rhin and this Riesling from the 5.6ha Rosacker vineyard is the top wine. Lifted lemon peel and white flower aromas lead to a delicate, dry palate of green apple, grapefruit and wet stones. Very stylish."

About the Producer

Cave de Hunawihr is a co-operative in Alsace, which was founded in 1954 in an attempt to re-establish winemaking in a territory that suffered greatly during World War Two. Today, Hunawihr has grown to 110 members and is equipped with a renovated winery and 200 hectares of vineyards, 80% of which are situated in Hunawihr and its surroundings, Riquewihr and Zellenberg. The Grand Cru holdings amount to 13 hectares and include Rosacker, Froehn, Sporen, Schoenenbourg and Osterberg.

The wines are fresh, clean, dry and aromatic, with good balancing acidity. Hunawihr manage 11 of Rosacker’s 26 hectares, 60% of which are Riesling, planted on clay and limestone soils. The Riesling Grand Cru ‘Rosacker’, sourced from 5.6 hectares, is Hunawihr’s flagship wine. It is versatile, with the ability to age and develop, as well as being a delight to drink now.

Vineyard and Winery

The 5.6 hectare Rosacker Grand Cru vineyard is north of Hunawihr, a small village between Ribeauville and Riquewihr. This is also where the famous parcel of Clos St Hune is located. Cave de Hunawihr work with 12 different growers who together own 5 hectares of this Grand Cru. The vineyard is situated 260-330 metres above sea level, facing east/south-east, with heavy, clay soils rich in calcium and magnesium, with limestone pebbles. The vines are on average years old.

All of the grapes were harvested by hand. After the grapes were pressed, there was a gentle cold settling of the must for 48 hours before fermentation at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged on fine lees for 4 - 6 months with regular stirring before being filtered and bottled.
