Krohn Tawny Port, DOC Porto NV has a tawny-red colour and aromatic notes of caramel, butterscotch, currants and spice. The sweet, smooth palate with rich red fruits and a nutty flavour is balanced by an elegant finish. Enjoy chilled as an aperitif, or at room temperature with nuts and cheese.

About the Producer

Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two Norwegians - Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn - shipping initially to Scandinavia and Germany. In the century and a half since its foundation, Krohn has built up an outstanding reputation. Long renowned for the quality of their sublime Colheitas (single vintage tawnies), they produce a remarkably complete range for a small house, and each wine excels in its category. Much of the secret lies in the high quality of their vineyards - the magical combination of terroir, locality, aspect, incline and low-yielding vines. Their Quinta do Retiro Novo estate in Sarzedinho, in the Rio Torto valley (where vinification takes place), is all A grade vineyard. Indeed Krohn only work with grapes from A-graded vineyards across all of their ports, and their top wines are still trodden by foot. Since 2013 Krohn has been part of the Fladgate Partnership - alongside Taylor's, Fonseca and Croft.

Vineyard and Winery

Vines are grown on schistous soils at Krohn's own estate and neighbouring vineyards. Grapes are vinified in closed fermentation tanks. Fermentation is interrupted through the addition of grape brandy to preserve natural sweetness, and the wine is then matured in old 600 litre casks.

A satisfying Port - value for money

Over the years I have tended to buy Late Bottled Vintage as a regular tipple, and bringing out the full vintage on special occasions. It was really ignorance that stopped me from trying either Tawny or Ruby Port. More fool me.
Krohn makes very excellent Tawny and Ruby Port at a price that is a steal. The Tawny, I find to be lighter and smoother of the two and Ruby is more full-bodied/richer. It is really horses for courses or personal taste.
An added bonus is that the corks on these bottles do not disintegrate on opening - whereas the LBV and Vintage are more susceptible to doing this no matter how careful you are or how long a corkscrew you use.
These are now my "go-to" choices for private sipping, and reserve the vintage for when I have guests.
