About the Producer

Since 1999, Sam Cooper and his family have been caring for honeybees in the beautiful, rural Ceredigion. It all began out of a boy’s love of beekeeping and has now turned into 500 beehives dotted across Wales. Transforming from a dairy farm to a bee farm it now hosts a Bees behind glass exhibition, coffee shop and gift shop making it the ideal visit for any nature enthusiast!

The team at Afon Mêl could go on, quite rightly, about how they have been beekeeping for 25 years and making mead for 20 years but all of that is in evidence in their products.

They have happy bees buzzing around an exciting selection of flowers when they fly around Ceredigion. Plants such as Sycamore, Hawthorn, Willow, Clover and Blackberry all grow wild in the hedgerows, hills and valleys. In Ceredigion there is a vast luxury of completely wild places that haven’t been farmed intensively. The on-going devotion to bees is the driving force behind everything they do.

Alongside the largest collection of real meads in the UK, Afon Mêl make five raw honeys and are the only producers of mead to have ever won the highest award from the Guild of Fine Food, The Great Taste, Golden Fork Award.

The traditional aging of Afon Mêl meads is characterised by the long time spent in barrels and bottle before sale and as a result, they have developed a wonderful variety of flavours and styles, all driven by the taste of honey.
