Juan Gil Comoloco is a rich and refreshing red wine with bright cherry and bramble flavours. Its supple tannins and gentle rosemary finish make it a perfect complement to pizza or vegetable lasagne.

The most interesting thing about the wine, other than the beautiful bright fruit flavours, herbaceousness and smooth taste, is that it the producers have done their best to lower the allergens.  They have not added sulphur and they have used special yeasts to lower the histamine levels. To have done this and made a delicious wine is very skilled stuff indeed.

About the Producer

The Gil family have been producers in Jumilla since the early 20th century but took a major step forward when Miguel Gil, great-grandson of the company's founder, built a new bodega in time for the 2003 vintage. Situated on the slopes of the Peñarrubia mountain, the highest part of Jumilla with poor stony soils noted for its richly flavoured, concentrated Monastrell, the bodega owns over 750 hectares of vineyards (mainly bush vines, unirrigated and of very low yield, of indigenous clones from their own nursery) and has access to further fruit from 30 to 70 year old vines. Bodegas Juan Gil is dedicated to producing powerful yet approachable and modern wines, mainly based on Monastrell, which is grown on 85% of the vineyard - other varieties grown are Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Vineyard and Winery

This red is 100% Monastrell, cultivated organically in chalky limestone soils at around 700 metres altitude in Jumilla. Low rainfall and plenty of sunshine are perfect for this variety. Though innovative viticultural techniques aid in helping this wine to be crafted to a fresher style, importantly, Juan Gil have worked with selected yeasts to create a wine that is low in histamines. Histamines are a naturally occuring part of fermented food and drinks which a small number of people are allergic to. In addition, as the winery do not use the commonly added preservative SO2, this can be a wine recommended to those who suffer from allergies. Because SO2 is a preservative, the wine has to be handled very carefully to prevent oxidadtion and this informs the very fresh and elegant style of Monastrell you have in the glass with this wine.
