The Tokaj region produces some of the finest dessert wines in the world and the Kardos Tokaji Forditas is no exception. Rich, exotic and dangerously more-ish! This golden liquid is packed with a unique combination of flavours, including honey, orange peel, spices, and dried fruit. Complex and full-bodied, it is a truly luxurious experience.
About the Producer
For centuries, the vineyards in Mád (recognised as Tokaj's premier wine region) have been owned by the same family. It wasn't until 1989, when Central and Eastern Europe underwent a revolution, that the Kardos winery was established. Initially selling wine from their own cellar door and to local bars, the business gained greater seriousness when the owner's son Gabor Jnr. joined the team full-time in 2008. Gabor Jnr. set out to modernise the winery, introducing techniques such as strict yield restrictions, bunch selection and selective harvesting to enhance the wine's quality. Kardos sources grapes from vineyards in Mád, Rátka and Bodrogkeresztúr and, according to Gabor Jnr., "produce wines that optimise the unique characteristics of the Mád terroir".
Vineyard and Winery
This region of Hungary is renowned for its sweet dessert wines, affected by noble rot. The soil contains high concentrations of iron & lime, & the unique micro-climate (cold winters, dry springs, hot summers & rainy autumns) allows a long ripening period. Furmint grapes start with thick skins, gradually becoming thinner; the sun's rays then evaporate the liquid within, boosting sugar content. Unlike other grapes, Furmint grows a 2nd skin which seals it from rot & boosts sugar concentration, allowing it to develop the 'noble rot' mould.
