Tasting Notes & Serving Suggestions
Pours a clean, bright pale gold. The nose opens straight away with freshly grated root ginger, candied stem ginger, and a crisp, aromatic lift of lemon oil.
On the palate, it strikes a tidy balance between sweet syrup and a genuine peppery ginger kick. The initial honeyed sweetness gives way to a prickle of authentic heat and tangy citrus peel that keeps the spirit lively rather than heavy. It finishes long, clean, and thoroughly warming, with lingering fresh ginger heat and tart lemon.
As an accompaniment it will enhance mince pies at Christmas and can even be included in the recipe! It is also good in Mulled Cider and as a boozy addition to a hot chocolate.
Serving Suggestions:
-
The Classic Whisky Mac: Pour equal measures of The King's Ginger and a decent blended Scotch or Highland malt over ice, or serve neat in a lowball glass for a traditional winter warmer.
-
King's & Tonic / Soda: Fill a highball glass with plenty of ice, add 50ml of The King's Ginger, top with quality tonic water or soda, and garnish with a fresh wedge of lime or slice of cucumber.
-
Neat or Flask: Sip it straight at room temperature, particularly after an autumn or winter walk.
About the Producer
The King’s Ginger carries one of the best backstories in British spirits. In 1903, the Royal Physician grew concerned that King Edward VII was catching chills while belting around the countryside in his newfangled open-top Daimler dogcart. He approached Berry Bros. & Rudd—the historic London wine and spirit merchants based at No. 3 St James’s Street since 1698—and commissioned a bespoke liqueur specifically designed to bring warmth back to His Majesty’s cheeks.
Over a century later, Berry Bros. & Rudd still oversee this iconic recipe, ensuring it remains an honest, unpretentious staple for cold days, flasks, and cocktail cabinets alike.
Production & Botanicals
Ingredients & Botanicals:
The recipe centres on slow-macerated real ginger root to draw out both deep earthy spice and sharp, fiery heat. This is blended with natural lemon peel oil and select botanicals to introduce a clean citrus top-note that cuts cleanly through the liqueur's sweetness.
Method & Bottling:
Following a subtle recipe update in recent years, the spirit is bottled at an approachable 29.9% ABV. This slightly lighter strength allows the authentic aromatics of fresh ginger root and crisp citrus to take centre stage over raw alcohol burn, producing a liqueur that is vibrant in cocktails and smooth enough to drink neat.
