About the Producer
Driven by his passion for winemaking, Adolfo de las Heras Marín founded Bodegas y Viñedos de Utiel in 1985, acquiring one of the estates with the greatest ecological and oenological value in the Valencian Region: Finca El Renegado. The Finca includes a vineyard and a forest; 80% of the vineyard is dedicated to the native Bobal variety and the vines are over 50 years old. Adolfo was also one of the first viticulturists to make high quality bottled wine in the area. In the late 1990s when his son, Adolfo de las Heras Polo, took over, he continued this philosophy and revolutionised the winery. He began to produce wines with greater ageing in barrels, from different types of French oak that imbued the wines with greater complexity and distinction. The ‘El Renegado’ wines take their name from the estate and honour the centuries-old Holm oaks that grow there. The organic wine illustrates the purest expression of the Bobal variety.
Vineyard and Winery
El Renegado (‘renegade’) is a celebration of the old vines that fill the estate, all the fruit for this wine comes from the El Renegado single vineyard, where the vines have a minimum age of 50 years. The estate is situated in one of the premium winemaking areas in the DO Utiel-Requena. The vineyard has a distinct micro climate, which is best described as Mediterranean although it does have some continental influences due to its altitude, which varies from 800-900 metres, and the distance from the sea approximately 50 miles inland from Valencia. The average annual temperature is 13.9°C and annual rainfall is on average 43 litres, which mostly falls in the spring and autumn. All the vines are trained onto trellises with modern systems and are planted in the clay and clay-limestone soils. The harvests generally start in August and finish at the end of September to early October; the grapes are picked at night or early morning, once the temperature has decreased in order to fully preserve the aromatic properties. Bobal is a dark-skinned wine grape variety native to Utiel-Requena, it has thick skin, is late budding and has good drought resistance properties, which ensures Bobal is well suited to the dry, continental landscape of the region.
The grapes were carefully selected and underwent controlled fermentation at low temperatures along with a long maceration process in stainless steel tanks to ensure the extraction of the fruity flavours. This wine was made without the influence of oak to allow the native Bobal variety to fully express its varietal character.
