Prosecco
Prosecco is principally made from the Glera grape variety grown in north-east Italy and made with the tank method. It has a pleasing, refreshing orchard fruit aroma with intense apple and pear, the wines are generally light bodied with crisp mouth-watering acidity and balanced alcohol. In terms of sweetness, the wines range from Brut to Demi-Sec, with Extra Dry (12–17 g/l of residual sugar) being the most common style. Prosecco is produced in both fully sparkling (spumante) and lower pressure (frizzante) styles.
Prosecco production is sitting at over 500million bottles per year and has become Italy's largest region. This area is ideal for exploring, as its manicured hills are a UNESCO world heritage site since 2019. Further to this, Venice is only an hour away, making it an ideal day trip. May visitors to the area might catch a glimpse of Giro d'Italia cyclists racing through Valdobbiadene. June's Conegliano Valdobbiadene Experience offers guests opportunities to explore vineyards, attend concerts and picnics. Early October brings the Centomiglia vintage car race to the hills and villages of the region.
While much of the vines are planted in the plains the best sites have south-facing slopes situated at 100-500m above sea level, sheltered by the forests on the hills’ north side. This moderate climate is constantly breezed and rain-drenched, enabling Glera, Prosecco’s main grape, to flourish. Further complemented by minuscule amounts of Glera Lunga, Verdiso, Perera, Bianchetta Trevigiana, and, inspiringly, some international grapes, such as Pinot Noir which was validated by the DOC in 2020.
Food Matching for Prosecco
Like Champagne and other sparkling wines, Prosecco is usually served as an aperitif or at parties where there are nibbles. These nibbles tend to be just perfect for Prosecco, salted crisps and nuts or antipasti and cheesey bites especially pecorino and parmesan.
