About the Producer

Bürgerspital in Würzburg is a VDP wine estate in Franconia with more than 700 years of history and tradition. In our 120 hectare vineyards we cultivate classic varieties such as Silvaner, Riesling and wines from Pinot varieties and all the best white wines are bottled in Bocksbeutel. Our most valuable heritage are the unique vineyards, especially the Würzburger Stein, Stein-Berg and the Stein-Harfe. It is our greatest motivation to produce the absolute best quality from these top sites: Unmistakable wines that show the unique character of each vineyard and bear the signature of Bürgerspital.

The winery is part of the Bürgerspital zum Hl. Geist Foundation, whose original foundation purpose was care of the elderly and needy, something that is continued to this day.  When visiting you can watch as this unique and wonderful place receives ambulances, catering for out-patients, and trucks full of grapes from the vineyard simultaneously. This social commitment is supported with every bottle of wine sold.

"The best thing is being able to create great wines with an unequalled portfolio of vineyards and a dynamic team that is able to produce great wines." Robert Haller Wine-Estate Director

Bürgerspital are a founding member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wineries) and the wines are classified according to the VDP.CLASSIFICATION. The wines are identified by the capsule with the grape eagle.

An almost Mediterranean climate prevails in the world-famous, shell-shaped vineyard site enthroned above Würzburg. Weathered shell limestone as sedimentary rock from the former primordial sea characterizes the location name and character of the wines in a unique way. A good 1/3 of the 85-hectare vineyard is owned by the Bürgerspital. But it is the great wines that make the vineyard so famous. Whether it was the Steinwein from 1540, the first Silvaner in 1665, the historic Bocksbeutel filling in 1726 or today: Steinwein is very complex and mineral, almost salty and very polarizing. They are regularly rated on the top step of the podium and have made it on to some very fine wine lists.
