Experience the power of Maison Brotte 'Domaine Barville' Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge. This ruby-hued wine with slight purple tints offers a complex nose of fresh red fruit, pepper, and mint. On the palate, enjoy the surprising roundness and softness of its young age, along with elegant fruit flavours and hints of blackberries, white pepper, and fresh ginger. The texture is remarkably broad and velvety.

Enjoy this wine now paired with a grilled rib of beef, a beef tartare with a Béarnaise sauce, a terrine of hare with plenty black pepper and, after a few years of aging, with a truffled fattened chicken, slow-roasted lamb, Avignon-style daube or soft chocolate cake.

Critic Review

Decanter Magazine: 92Pts (2019 Vintage)

"A tempting spiciness on the nose lures you in. Rounded but not excessive. Fresh, well balanced with well-integrated acidity and a tapered finish. Gentle tension accentuates the spicy, tense style. 20% new oak."

About the Producer

Wine has occupied a major place in the Brotte family for two centuries already. In 1880, Mr. Amouroux and Mr. Clouplet, ancestors of Laurent and Christine Brotte respectively, were already busy in the vineyards. One in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the other in Cairanne. These two winegrowers who represent the first generation of the House planted and perpetuated vines that would later become the Domaines Barville and Grosset.

Maison Brotte was officially created in 1931 when Charles Brotte (2nd generation), a recent graduate of a business school in Marseille, decided to create his own company in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Maison Brotte thus began to offer a wide range of wines from the Rhône Valley and placed itself among the pioneers in this field.

The year 2015 was marked by the arrival of the 5th generation at the estate. Thibault and Benoît now work alongside their parents and bring freshness and dynamism to the company. Today, there are three generations cooperating in the development of the house.

Vineyard and Winery

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, located between Orange and Avignon. Domaine Barville Red comes from a 15-hectare vineyard.

Domaine Barville has about 15 hectares, made up of 7 plots located on two of the oldest and finest terroirs in the west of the AOC: red clay and pebbles in the “Pradel” lieu-dit and fragmented limestone in the “Beaurenard” lieu-dit.  The very hot climate and excellent exposure facilitate the ripening and concentration of the grapes.

Each grape variety is picked separately by hand and transported quickly in small crates to prevent the grapes from crushing and oxidising.  We started handling the grapes even more carefully from the 2020 vintage. The wine is aged in French oak barrels (1/3 new, 1/3 used for one fill, 1/3 used for two fills) for the tannic Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache wines, while the softer Grenache wines are aged in concrete tanks and 100-year-old oak foudres to preserve the fruit. The wine is bottled in the March after over a year of ageing and a light filtration.
