Experience the intense, ripe raspberry flavours of the Grenache fruit of Château l’Ermite d’Auzan Rouge, perfectly balanced by savoury notes from Syrah and Mourvèdre. With smooth, ripe tannins, this wine pairs perfectly with Côte de Boeuf, lamb cutlets, and dishes with a touch of spice or heat. Let its bright garnet colour and fruity, spicy structure quench your thirst. Best served at 16-18°C with a variety of dishes, including barbecue, steak, sausage, and mature cheese.

Carefully stored this Château l’Ermite d’Auzan Rouge should still be drinking very nicely in 5 years.

About the Producer

The estate was founded in the 11th Century by the hermits of Sainte Cécile d'Estagel Abbaye and it made wine for pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostella. The estate encompasses 80 hectares of sunny, south-facing vineyards planted on sandstone soils and benefitting from Mediterranean breezes that cool the vines in the summer.

Our supplier has a close relationship with the owner Jérôme Castillon and he has been instrumental in crafting some of our their own label wines in his cellar. For his own wines, Jérôme restricts the use of oak influence as much as possible and new oak is not used. Favouring old oak, he purchases old oak tronconique fermenters when they get renewed at Domaine Boutinot in Cairanne.

The estate's name changed from Château l'Ermitage to Château L'Ermite d'Auzan in 2020.

Vineyard and Winery

The domaine is in the south of the appellation cooled by the sea breezes of the Camargue and sitting on an ancient, raised river bed with galets roulés soil. The vines are 25 years old and yields are around 50 hl/ha. Grapes are destemmed and fermented traditionally for 15 days to ensure a good balance of fruit and tannins. The 80ha estate has been farming organically for quite some time, and received official organic certification in 2020.
