Mineralstein Sauvignon Blanc opens with inviting aromas of ripe gooseberry and greengage, with subtle nettle notes that add to the freshness. On the palate, it's beautifully balanced, crisp citrus fruits takes centre stage, backed by lively natural acidity and a grassy, herbaceous character. You'll find delicate flavours of gooseberry and passion fruit woven throughout, all supported by a well-structured body that leads to a zesty, citrusy finish. A very approachable and sophisticated with a focus on finesse over intensity.

About the Producer

Gerd Stepp grew up in Bad Dürkheim in the Mittelhaardt of the Pfalz. As a child he watched and helped his parents tend their vines and make wine. He would help them prune the vines, harvest the grapes by hand and – his favourite task – drive the tractor. Gerd always knew that wherever his career took him – and like so many in the trade he started in Oddbins (in London) – he would return home. Today, Gerd farms the family’s vineyards and runs the little winery, also buying some grapes from like-minded growers in the region. Having returned to Bad Dürkheim after making wines around the globe, his technical winemaking skills combined with commercial experience allow him to produce a range of wines which are both great value and especially good and true expressions of these grape varieties.

Vineyard and Winery

Sauvignon Blanc is a new variety for the Pfalz region - but it certainly loves growing on our limestone-rich soils, especially in vineyards such as the Kirchenstück in Herxheim am Berg, which is located at a higher altitude. Here the cooler nights protect the delicate flavours of the Sauvignon Blanc grape and retain its natural acidity and freshness.

With Sauvignon Blanc we not only look at sugar levels, pH and acidity during ripening control pre-harvest - we taste a lot the berries to determine the best time for picking the grapes. The grapes are then gently de-stemmed and the juice separated from the skins immediately. The juice is fermented with specially selected yeasts at a moderate temperature of around 15-18°C. As with all other wines – the Sauvignon Blanc stays 'sur lie’ till bottling and is only filtered once prior to going into the bottle. Some of the natural carbon dioxide is retained for extra freshness.
