Craigellachie is unapologetically stubborn in its craft. Utilising traditional worm-tub condensers and oil-fired kilns, it produces a distinctively muscular, sulfurous distillate bursting with notes of flint, malt, and struck matches. For Cask #302040, Berry Bros. & Rudd married this raw, mechanical Speyside power with the refined elegance of a premier Margaux wine cask from Bordeaux. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 55.4%, the robust spirit tames the red-wine tannins, creating an extraordinary tension between savoury firework intensity and delicate red fruit aromatics.
Nose: Immediate Craigellachie DNA: fresh hay, warm malt, and a flinty crack of fireworks. Given time to breathe, the Margaux wood reveals a gentle, romantic floral side of crushed rose petals, wild bramble berries, and ripe summer plums.
Palate: Broad, textured, and punchy. Tart redcurrants, dark cherries, and macerated raspberries blend with robust malted grains, cracked peppercorns, and hints of gentle wood smoke. The wine cask brings structured, savoury oak tannins that accentuate the whisky's weight.
Finish: Protracted, complex, and drying. Notes of dark berry skins, earthy oak, toasted malt, and a whisper of lingering flint smoke leave an indelible impression.
