Bodega Urqo Malbec Organico has a beautiful depth of colour, on the nose there are enticing aromas of ripe cherries, plums, and menthol, a herbaceous note that speaks to its high-altitude Andean home. The palate reveals a silky texture and vibrant acidity, layered with dark fruit that lingers beautifully. This is an unoaked wine aged on its lees in stainless steel tank which lend the wines purity of fruit and minerality. It is elegant yet structured and pairs well with seared duck breast, smoky pork ribs, or almost any dish with warm spices.

About the Producer

Not far from the mountain town of Tupungato, the Urquia family have invested in 300 hectares of desert soils shadowed by the immensity of the Argentine Andes. The winery's name, Urqo, elegantly merges the family's surname and the Uco Valley. Urqo's vineyards spread across Los Chacayes and Tupungato districts and benefit from this raw exposure. The high UV and the mean, sandy soils of the desert environment are ideal for producing characterful fruit. The bodega itself is minimalist, a clean white structure designed, in simple terms, to best convey the essence of these grapes.

The wine labels reflect owner Loli Urquia’s deep respect for the earth’s natural energies. Alongside young Uruguayan winemaker Leo Pisano, the small team are overseen by the consultative presence of affable local legend Daniel Pi. Their collaborative efforts yield wines with the aromatic purity of the Andean air and a pronounced mineral quality. This energy and perfume belies the austerity in which they are grown.

Vineyard and Winery

The grapes for this Organic Malbec come from Finca Los Durmientes, located in the Uco Valley, at an average altitude of 1,030 meters above sea level. The soil is deep sandy loam. The grapes are brought into the winery and cooled for a cold maceration process lasting 3 to 5 days. After this, alcoholic fermentation takes place over 10 days. The wine is made with reduced amounts of sulphur dioxide and with all the care required by organic production standards. It is a low-intervention wine. During ageing, it is kept in stainless steel tanks on its fine lees to enhance its flavour.
