Rutherglen Estate Renaissance Shiraz is a red wine with depth of colour and flavour, initially showcasing rich aromas of dark plums and cassis. On the palate, there are concentrated notes of chocolate and licorice, balanced by smoky cedar oak and spice. Grainy tannins add to the fullness and structure and help to supply the lingering finish. This full and persistent Shiraz is ready to enjoy now but will continue to develop complexity over 3 to 6 years and can cellar beautifully for up to 15 years.

About the Producer

The De Bortoli family story is one of determination and triumph that started 90 years ago and is now told, generations later, across Australia.

Their heritage encompasses the universal story of immigrants making good in an adopted land, the rise and rise of the Australian wine industry and the tale of a hardworking and innovative family which considers good wine, good food and good friends to be among the true pleasures in life.

Today, as a fourth generation enters the family business, De Bortoli is amongst the top wine producers in Australia with vineyards spanning six premium wine regions.

Vineyard and Winery

The grapes for this Shiraz are grown on the De Bortoli Burgoyne and Shelley’s vineyards on the eastern edge of the Rutherglen region. Both sites have an interesting range of aspects from the warmer westerly facing sites to a south facing block. The soils are a range of gravel, clay and alluvial soil mix, resulting in a positive diversity of fruit flavour profiles.

Selected from some of the most prized Shiraz vineyards on the Estate, the 2019 Shiraz is partially crushed into small, temperature controlled vats. A small percent of the fruit is handpicked and is added to ferment as whole bunches to add freshness. This small amount of stems help give a complex tannin structure. A portion of the fruit is cold soaked prior to alcohol fermentation to keep a bright and vibrant fruit profile. A small percentage of Viognier is added to help lift aromatics and freshness which is evident in this vintage! The wine is aged in French and American oak to give tightness and roundness on the palate whilst helping to give complexity in all areas. There was 15% new oak.
