Organic Wines

Organic Wines come from Organic Viticulture where the aim is to improve the quality of the wine by improving the sustainability and quality of the soil.  An increase in the diversity of microbes and animals like earthworms in the ground will have a health improving effect on the land increasing the disease resistance of the individual vines.  There is no room for manufactured fertilisers, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides in Organic Viticulture.

In the absence of these synthetic applications, the use of compost which in breaking down in the soil will offer a slow release of nutrients, improve the soil structure and increase the biomass.

Allowing or encouraging 'cover crops' to grow will prevent erosion of the soil and add to the improvement of the life within it.  These improvements happen through churning the rows between the vines and essentially turning the growth into 'green manure'.  'Cover crops' also remove the monoculture aspect of a vineyard increasing the biodiversity.

The use of natural fertilisers such as animal dung, calcium carbonate can restore the natural balance of the vineyard and are accepted in Organic viticulture.

Pests are controlled in a different way in Organic viticulture with the clever use of Pheromone tags or capsules which causes 'sexual confusion' disrupting the mating patterns of insects such as moths and mealy bugs.

Gaining certification to prove your vineyard is Organic costs money, time and effort but the benefits are often clear in the quality of the wines.
