Château Lalande's AOP Saint-Julien is an outstanding wine that offers a perfect balance of richness and power. Featuring an expressive nose of pencil lead and tea chest, the palate bursts with intense cassis fruit and fine grained tannins. Enjoy this great flavour experience at half the price of classed Saint-Julien estates. The ideal companion to a roast beef Sunday Lunch.

About the Producer

From the consistent and often underrated Bordeaux appellation of Saint-Julien, this gem of a Petit Château on the left bank of the Gironde is well worthy of its position between the more famous Château Talbot and third growth Château Lagrange, of which it was once a part. Since 1964, the winery has been owned by the Meffre family, and today it is managed Jean-Paul and his two sons, Ludovic and Julien.

Vineyard and Winery

Château Lalande is made up from 55% Cabernet, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and is perfectly situated between Châteaux Talbot and Lagrange (classified in 1855 as fourth and third growths respectively).  This enviable position elevates what is in fact a simple petite château to something quite special.  Grapes are carefully harvested before being destemmed and crushed and transfered to temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Fermentation lasts around 10-15 days, with 7 days maceration.  The wine spends 12 months in oak, around 30% of which is new (depending upon the nature of the vintage).

Too good to be true? No, I am afraid it is that good

There is a story of a senior doctor writing a reference for one of his juniors in his hospital unit. "Give this doctor a good reference- never! I want to keep him on my team."
Well, I feel a bit like this when reviewing this lovely Bordeaux. I fear that if I told it like it is, then Aitkens would be sold out of it and there would be none left for me. An added bonus is that it is great straight from the bottle with little need for decanting (though I still do). A great good solid claret that should please anyone who enjoys Bordeaux-style wines.
