About the Region and Producer
The vast La Mancha plain south of Madrid and east of Toledo is the largest wine-producing region in Spain. Its arid climate, with marked seasonal swings moderated by strong winds, has led to the extensive planting of the Arien white grape variety, though this is being supplanted by Tempranillo, Shiraz and Garnacha, as traditional wineries are being replaced by modern facilities, signifying a transformation of the region's winemaking.
Josep Masachs Llorach owned vineyards in Vilafranca del Penedès as early as 1920, and was one of the area's first producers of still wines. His son, in the 1950s, made this his profession and transformed Cal Cabanyes into his homebase of operations. Now, the fourth generation of the family, Joan Masachs and Alex Ruíz Masachs - with a wealth of enology and global sales experience - are bringing a fresh, innovative approach to the family business, creating environmentally conscious products under their guidance.
