Tasting Notes & Food Pairings
Pours a deep, inviting ruby red with garnet glints in the glass. The nose opens with aromas of ripe black cherry, dried cranberry, and macerated plum, followed by hints of roasted coffee bean, sweet cinnamon, and cocoa.
On the palate, it delivers plenty of northern Italian warmth without ever feeling sluggish or overly heavy. Layers of ripe forest fruits and blackberry compote are supported by fine, rounded tannins and a fresh seam of acidity that keeps everything nicely balanced. The finish is long, smooth, and pleasantly savoury, leaving lingering notes of cracked black pepper and dark chocolate.
Food Pairings:
This is built for proper comforting scran. It pairs effortlessly with slow-braised beef shin, venison sausages, or a rich cottage pie. If pasta is on the menu, try it alongside a slow-simmered beef ragù or baked aubergine parmigiana. It is equally at home next to a cheeseboard featuring mature cheddar, Pecorino, or smoked Gouda.
About the Producer
Enrico Marcato is an intuitive Venetian winemaker born into a family with deep viticultural roots in the Veneto. After refining his cellar skills across prestigious wine regions in California and Australia, Enrico returned home to establish Marcato Direct and the EM Family of Wine project.
His ethos is refreshingly straightforward: respect regional tradition, keep interventions honest, and craft distinctive wines that drink well above their price point. With Duo Rosso, Marcato offers an unpretentious, modern alternative to costly Amarone, showcasing the fruit quality of Verona and Vicenza with genuine craft and drinkability.
Vineyard & Winery
Viticulture & Terroir:
The grapes are selected from hillside vineyards across the Veneto, bridging the calcareous soils of Verona with the volcanic gravels of the Colli Berici hills in Vicenza. The region enjoys warm, sunny days tempered by cool Alpine breezes, creating the diurnal temperature variation needed to ripen grapes thoroughly while preserving their vibrant natural acidity. Corvina brings bright, tart red fruit and freshness, while Cabernet Franc adds savoury complexity, gentle spice, and structure.
Winemaking & Maturation:
The "Duo" name reflects both the blend of two complementary varieties and the pairing of two distinct winemaking traditions. A portion of the harvested fruit undergoes appassimento—slow drying on slatted racks to dehydrate the grapes, concentrating sugars, colour, and aromatic depth in the classic Amarone style. The remainder is fermented fresh at controlled temperatures in stainless steel to retain brightness and fruit vibrancy. Following blending, the wine is matured for approximately 10 months in seasoned oak casks, integrating subtle toasted oak nuances and softening the tannins. Bottled using vegan-friendly fining methods.
