About the Producer

The Castaño family owns over 410 hectares of vineyards in the Yecla DO in south-eastern Spain. 80% of these vineyards are planted with the native Monastrell variety. For several generations, Bodegas Castaño has been a pioneer in this region and has come to symbolise the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at altitude, resulting in wines of great character and finesse.

Vineyard and Winery

The grapes were harvested from 70 year old Monastrell vines and 32 year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines, planted at 750 metres above sea level. The soil there is stony and sandy with a lime subsoil. The short bush vines have a planting density of 1,600 plants per hectare and yield 1,500 to 2,000 kilograms per hectare. The vineyard for Colección has a very different microclimate from the rest of the region, which is clearly continental. It has minimum temperatures of -10°C in winter and up to 42°C in summer.

Small bunches were hand harvested and taken straight to the winery. Fermentation took place over 12 days at a controlled temperature of between 26-28°C, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged for 10 months in oak barrels (80% French and 20% American oak), of which 60% were new.
