About the Producer

For hundreds of years, to increase their income, small Arran communities made their own spirit in illicit home-made stills. The resulting whisky, which became known as ‘Arran Waters’, was smuggled from Lagg and sold on mainland Scotland. Lagg Single Malts are distilled and matured on a low lying stretch of coast near the village of Kilmory at the south end of the Isle of Arran, in the Island's agricultural heartland. Distilling has been present in this tight-knit community for hundreds of years.  This modern characterful Lagg Single Malt continues the rich tradition of peated whisky in this part of the Island. This new Arran Whisky adventure began with the building of the Distillery in 2017

Production began at their first distillery in beautiful Lochranza almost 30 years ago. Many other locations were considered at the time, but the proximity to Loch na Davie provided a rather special source of fresh water for distilling. It was clear that this would hold them in good stead in the years to come. The second distillery opened in the south of the island in 2019 at Lagg, where they make a very unique style of peated single malt Scotch Whisky.

The area is home to some of the purest water in all of Scotland – every drop of Arran Single Malt starts its life as rainwater which pools at Loch na Davie in the beautiful hills behind the distillery. The clear water cascades down the hillside, through six unassuming waterfalls, each one purifying the water further. The name of the burn, Easan Biorach, means 'Sharp Waterfalls' in Gaelic. The purity of the water means that they can create a clean, sweet dram which is entirely natural and unadulterated. They never add caramel or strip flavour out using chill filtration.
