Tasting Notes & Serving Suggestions
Pours a deep, gleaming mahogany with copper-gold glints in the glass. On the nose, it hits with immediate weight and presence: treacle toffee, dark muscovado sugar, and bitter cocoa, lifted by dried orange peel, stewed damson plum, pipe tobacco, and a punch of warming clove and nutmeg.
On the palate, it delivers the true, muscular body expected of proper Navy proof without searing heat. A rich foundation of Guyanese demerara molasses and creamy Bajan vanilla arrives first, before bursting into Jamaican pot-still fruit cake, dried raisins, charred oak, and cracked black pepper. The finish is remarkably long, dry, and warming, tapering off with lingering roasted walnut, dark dark chocolate, and zesty citrus oils.
Serving Suggestions:
At an authentic 55.7% ABV (historic Admiralty proof), this has plenty of backbone. It is remarkably rewarding sipped neat at room temperature, though a splash of cool spring water helps temper the alcohol and coaxes out softer stone-fruit and honeyed vanilla notes. For mixed drinks, it makes an unforgettable Navy Grog (churned with crushed ice, fresh lime, grapefruit juice, and honey syrup) or a robust Rum Old Fashioned.
About the Producer
Overseen by master blender Alexandre Gabriel, Planteray Rum (formerly Plantation) is celebrated for its dedication to historical distillation methods and pioneering dual-climate maturation. Rather than leaning on generic spirit formulas, Gabriel and his team work directly with legacy distilleries to recreate vanished styles with genuine historical integrity.
Mister Fogg is a direct tribute to the late Michael Fogg, a Royal Navy veteran and revered rum historian who served as the final employee of the rum department at ED&F Man—the London merchants who held the official contract to supply rum to the British Royal Navy from 1784 until Black Tot Day on 31 July 1970. Developed in close partnership with naval archives and rum historians, this bottling represents an honest, unvarnished recreation of the daily tot poured aboard British warships for nearly two centuries.
Production & Maturation
Multi-Origin Admiralty Blending:
Historic Navy rum was never the product of a single island; it was a constantly evolving dockside blend designed for depth, longevity, and sea-going robustness. Mister Fogg brings together components from the core historic British naval suppliers:
-
Barbados (West Indies Rum Distillery): Column and pot-still rums that provide aromatic balance, fruit, and supple vanilla structure.
-
Trinidad (Trinidad Distillers Ltd): Light and heavy rums bringing smooth caramel, roasted nuts, and drying oak.
-
Guyana (Diamond Distillery): Heavy, rich Demerara rums that anchor the spirit with deep dark treacle and earthy liquorice.
-
Jamaica (Clarendon & Long Pond): Pot-still rums that supply essential high-ester funk, ripe tropical fruit, and bold island character.
Dynamic Sea Ageing & Open-Vat Conditioning:
After primary ageing in ex-bourbon American oak casks across their respective tropical origins, the rums were shipped across the Atlantic to France, mirroring the historic dynamic ageing that occurred inside wooden casks aboard rolling naval vessels.
Once in the cellars of Maison Ferrand in Javrezac, the components were blended and transferred into seasoned oak casks and large, open wooden vats along the banks of the river L’Antenne. This extensive open-air oxygenation deliberate replicates the humid, tidal microclimate of London’s historic Royal Naval Victualling Yards at Deptford, mellowing the heavy spirits and yielding a cohesive, time-honoured Navy profile.
