About the Producer
Founded in 1978 by the vision of Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani,
Banfi represents a superb marriage of winemaking passion and technological
innovation. In collaboration with Ezio Rivella, one of Italy's most eminent winemakers,
the land purchased in Montalcino was transformed into a crucible of quality and
potential. The subsequent acquisition of the historic Piedmontese winery Bruzzone,
further enriched the portfolio. Banfi is committed to responsible environmental
stewardship and has obtained the sustainable Equalitas certification, at organisational
and product level, for some productions. Their Brunello di Montalcino Poggio all’Oro
2016 was the first Brunello di Montalcino to obtain this certification. This legendary
producer has a pioneering spirit, and their series of quintessential wines are not only
world class, but they also perfectly encapsulate their terroir.
Vineyard and Winery
Typical Tuscan soils with clay and pebbles, top wire cordon trained. The winter was mild, with slightly higher temperatures than the seasonal averages. Slightly lower rainfall than average from January to April was followed by abundant rain in May and June. Following the wet, early summer months, the weather patterns changed to warmer, drier conditions which allowed the grapes to reach maturity. The Pinot Grigio harvest began on the 23rd August and the Chardonnay on the 31st August, resulting in good quality balanced fruit.
Fermentation in temperature-controlled (13-15°C) stainless steel tanks and aged on lees for a minimum of 2 months.
