Château Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc is a very well-regarded wine commanding 5th growth status. Cabernet and Merlot make up 90% of the blend with supporting roles from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for 16 months before release with aging done in 50% new oak. 2011 did not have the easiest growing season but, as ever, great care and attention has resulted in a well-balanced wine that, after more than a decade since it was made, is now drinking beautifully. Château Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc will continue to age gracefully for another decade, perhaps longer. This wine is a class apart and the recognisable definition of flavours, soft sweet tannins and long finish make this truly special.
There is a delicious presence of cassis on the impressive palate which contains plenty primary fruit despite its advancing years, all sitting comfortably alongside a very Médoc typicity of cedar and smoke. There is a beautiful depth of colour and discreet spicy aromas, this wine shows a stunning firmness and complexity. Decanting is optional prior to service and will reward you with fine aromas of coffee, cedar and blackcurrant as it develops. Château Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc is perfect with red meat dishes, especially a Sunday Roast or Christmas Dinner. No need for a major fuss though it will perfectly accompany an omelette with wild mushrooms or a splendid cheese board.
