There is a delicious presence of cassis on the impressive palate which contains plenty primary fruit despite its advancing years, all sitting comfortably alongside a very Médoc typicity of cedar and smoke.  There is a beautiful depth of colour and discreet spicy aromas, this wine shows a stunning firmness and complexity.  Decanting is optional prior to service and will reward you with fine aromas of coffee, cedar and blackcurrant as it develops.  Château Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc is perfect with red meat dishes, especially a Sunday Roast or Christmas Dinner.  No need for a major fuss though it will perfectly accompany an omelette with wild mushrooms or a splendid cheese board.

"Seductive damson and cassis fruit on the attack. This is impressive, still plenty of sappy fresh fruit at 10 years old, along with a ton of Médoc cedar and smoke signature. Enjoyable overall, should be great with food and should age for another decade at least. Good stuff. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 50% new oak."

About the Producer

Château Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc is a very well-regarded wine commanding 5th growth status. Cantemerle is a 5ème cru classé, located in the appellation of Haut Medoc. Its inclusion in the 1855 Classification as the final entry is notable. Despite its viticultural roots dating back to 1354, the estate was predominantly known for cattle and cereal farming. Positioned south of Margaux, Cantemerle produces classical wines that offer exceptional value and benefit from aging, while also being approachable for early consumption.

Vineyard and Winery

Cabernet and Merlot make up 90% of the blend with supporting roles from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.  The wine is aged for 16 months before release with aging done in 50% new oak.  2011 did not have the easiest growing season but, as ever, great care and attention has resulted in a well-balanced wine that, after more than a decade since it was made, is now drinking beautifully.  Château Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc will continue to age gracefully for another decade, perhaps longer.  This wine is a class apart and the recognisable definition of flavours, soft sweet tannins and long finish make this truly special.

Amazing Claret and well worth the price

I bought this for a visiting friend. A bit more than I usually spend for a bottle, but I felt my friend was worth it. Well as soon I tasted this wine I instantly regretted buying it_- I just had to buy it again! The taste is beautiful, smooth, and refined. An absolute delight.
Well, as good as my word I have put my money where my keyboard is and have bought two more bottles, and was delighted to see it is currently under special offer with £5 off. I am tempted to buy some more if the offer continues when I return.
