Gómez Cruzado Montes Obarenes Rioja Blanco is a wonderfully complex, barrel-fermented white rioja which perfectly represents the terroir. This wine is produced from the finest quality fruit grown on the slopes of the Montes Obarenes, near Haro.
The grapes are sourced from vineyards near Haro, at the foot of Montes Obarenes, where soils are chalky-clay with a good degree of limestone. It is around here that the River Ebro enters the Rioja region bringing clouds and cooler temperatures, making ideal conditions for superior quality white grapes. The mix is 75% Viura, with a quarter Tempranillo Blanco. These are all hand-harvested with further hand-sorting at the winery. Eighty percent of the must is fermented and given time on its fine lees in new French oak barrels. The remaining twenty percent is aged on its fine lees in egg-shaped concrete vessels.
The Viura, grown on old bush vines, gives marvelous complexity and a strong backbone of minerality which balances the textural, ripe fruit and smooth, spicy oak. The wine finishes rich and long and is a highly characterful partner to full-flavoured, creamy pasta and chicken dishes.
