Tasting Notes & Pairing Suggestions

On the nose, it opens with pure aromas of crushed blackberries, ripe red cherries, and dried thyme, backed by subtle undertones of cigar box, vanilla, and cracked black pepper from careful French oak ageing. The palate is fleshy and supple, carrying generous damson and plum fruit framed by smooth, fine-grained tannins. Thanks to the estate's cool northern microclimate, there is a lovely streak of fresh acidity running through the core, keeping the finish clean, persistent, and remarkably drinkable.

Superb alongside roast shoulder of Scotch lamb with rosemary and garlic, or a platter of aged Manchego, cured jamón serrano, and crusty sourdough.

About the Producer

Propiedad de Arínzano carries a winemaking heritage stretching back to 1055, nestled in a sheltered river valley in northern Spain's Navarra region. While the estate has seen monks, nobility, and master winemakers tend its soils over nearly a millennium, its modern reputation was cemented in 2007 when it became the very first property in northern Spain to be awarded Vino de Pago status. This is Spain's highest legal quality tier—a classification reserved exclusively for single estates whose unique microclimate and terroir produce wines of exceptional character and consistency.

Today, with an architecturally striking bodega designed by Rafael Moneo, the estate combines state-of-the-art winemaking with a genuine commitment to environmental stewardship, farming sustainably in harmony with the local wildlife and nature reserve along the River Ega.

Vineyard & Winery

Viticulture:

The vineyards sit in an amphitheatre-like valley influenced by both Atlantic breezes and continental sunshine. Warm days allow the grapes to reach optimum phenolic ripeness, while sharp night-time temperature drops lock in lively natural acidity and aromatic freshness. The vines grow in deep, well-draining soils of alluvial gravel, limestone, and loam, managed under certified organic viticultural methods with naturally low yields to ensure maximum flavour concentration.

Winemaking:

Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted meticulously before undergoing gentle destemming and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Gentle pump-overs extract fine tannins, rich colour, and pure varietal character without harshness. The wine is then aged for approximately 14 months in selected French oak barriques (a combination of new and second-use casks), allowing the fruit to soften and develop savoury complexity before bottling.
