About the Producer

It's no secret to fans of the band that Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer, is a true jack of all trades. As well as fronting one of the best-known heavy metal bands on the planet, he is an airline pilot, has a PhD in History and also produces beer and wine. After beer, a business he already owned, Dickinson signs his first “Made in Portugal” wine, made by Van Zeller Wine Collection.

Like his beer brand, this wine is also inspired by one of the singles from Iron Maiden's latest album, released in 2021. In Darkest Hour, Bruce Dickinson pays a kind of tribute to the British resistance during World War II and, in particular, to the figure of Winston Churchill. The story of the wine is simpler - symbolically, a Douro DOC from the 2021 harvest was chosen to create this red (a “darkest red”, as Bruce likes to joke), from two of the region's traditional grape varieties, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz.

Iron Maiden have good taste in wine

A delicious Douro doc, smooth and easy drinking with a balanced, rounded, juicy character; to taste it gives plentiful impressions - and not unexpectedly for Portuguese drink - of a much lighter Port wine, with notes of fresh red berries and cherry supported by very mild spice and (perhaps, I couldn't really decide) even just a hint of chocolate. I am no sommelier but would describe the acidity as very mild, too - this is a wine nobody could ever describe as harsh.

As for the band? To be honest I've never been all that into them, but the wine was good enough that I've started listening to more since drinking it, and you can trust that I have (and still intend to) purchased more.

If you're thinking of trying this wine, you really should.

If you're thinking of trying this wine *and you already think you'll like it* then I can only recommend buying two bottles rather than one; this is a drink I've always found myself wanting another glass of, when I've had it.
