Tasting Notes & Serving Suggestions
Crystal-clear in the glass with a brilliant, silver-bright sheen. On the nose, it immediately sets itself apart from standard unaged white rums, offering delicate aromas of creamy toffee, rich demerara sugar, and vanilla pod, backed by faint floral notes and a refreshing lift of lime peel.
The palate is remarkably smooth and medium-bodied, carrying a gentle natural sweetness without feeling cloying or heavy. Soft flavours of fudge, desiccated coconut, and fresh citrus give way to light baking spices and a whisper of toasted oak from its time in cask. The finish is crisp, clean, and dry, leaving lingering hints of candied lemon zest, cracked pepper, and vanilla.
Serving Suggestions:
-
Classic Daiquiri: Shake 50ml Ron Matusalem Platino with 25ml fresh lime juice and 15ml simple sugar syrup over plenty of ice, then strain into a chilled coupe. The rum's cask-aged depth gives the drink real backbone without masking the citrus.
-
Platino Highball: Pour 50ml over cubed ice in a tall glass, top with premium Mediterranean tonic water or fiery ginger beer, and garnish with a generous wedge of fresh pink grapefruit or lime.
About the Producer
Founded in Santiago de Cuba in 1872 by Spanish brothers Benjamín and Eduardo Camp alongside partner Evaristo Álvarez, Ron Matusalem was created to bring the refined solera ageing methods of Spanish brandy and sherry to the world of Caribbean rum. The name was inspired by the Spanish proverb "más viejo que Matusalén" ("older than Methuselah"), reflecting their commitment to patience, careful wood maturation, and longevity.
During the golden era of Havana in the 1930s to 1950s, Matusalem was the spirit of choice for cocktail lovers, celebrated across Cuba's legendary bars. Following the Cuban Revolution, the family took their heritage yeast strain, blending secrets, and solera craftsmanship into exile. Today, production takes place in the Dominican Republic, where the tropical climate, limestone-rich water, and exceptional sugar cane mimic the microclimate of their original eastern Cuban home.
Production & Maturation
Distillation & Maturation:
Matusalem Platino is crafted from high-grade sugar cane molasses, fermented with the house's proprietary heritage yeast strain before being triple-distilled in modern column stills for a pure, clean spirit run. Unlike standard industrial white rums that go straight from still to bottle, Platino spends meaningful time maturing in lightly charred ex-bourbon American white oak casks using Matusalem’s signature Solera system.
Charcoal Filtration:
Once the rum has extracted soft wood tannins, vanilla, and rounded mouthfeel from the oak, it undergoes a delicate filtration process through activated charcoal. This removes the amber colour while preserving the rich texture, aromatic esters, and mature flavours developed in the cask, yielding an impeccably refined white rum that behaves brilliantly in cocktails.
