Tasting Notes & Food Pairings
Pours a bright, pale straw in the glass. On the nose, it immediately delivers generous aromas of ripe yellow peach, golden apricot, and wild honeysuckle, backed by tropical hints of sweet melon and juicy pineapple.
On the palate, this is crisp and thirst-quenching while offering plenty of body to get your teeth into. Succulent stone fruit and zesty citrus flavours lead the way, underpinned by a rounded, slightly creamy texture achieved through four months of gentle lees contact. Unwooded and lively throughout, it finishes clean and mouth-watering with a lingering note of peardrop and orchard blossom.
Food Pairings:
An easy-going white match for honest, flavourful foods. It pairs brilliantly with roast lemon and herb chicken, a traditional fish pie, pan-seared sea bass, or crispy pork belly with apple compote. It also has enough weight and freshness to handle mild spices—try it alongside Cape Malay chicken curry or grilled peri-peri prawns. For cheese lovers, a wedge of mature Scottish cheddar or crumbly goat’s cheese hits the spot.
About the Producer
Old Road Wine Co. is based in Franschhoek, right in the historic heartland of South Africa's winelands. Founded by a passionate collective of wine veterans led by Tim Hutchinson the outfit takes its inspiration from the characters, stories, and tradespeople who walked the town's original main road and built its rich wine heritage.
Rather than chasing fleeting cellar trends or charging overinflated prices, Old Road Wine Co. focuses on honest craft, ethical farming, and championing prized pockets of older vines across the Western Cape. Their winemaking team, headed by Ryan Puttick, produces unpretentious, terroir-driven bottles made to be enjoyed around a bustling dinner table rather than left collecting dust on an ornamental shelf.
This wine takes its name from Le Courier—the dedicated valley postman who toiled across rough tracks through summer heat and winter rain to deliver fresh food, letters, and supplies to the village. In that same dependable spirit, Old Road Wine Co. works with selected growers across the Western Cape to turn out honest, characterful wines focused purely on quality fruit, heritage vineyards, and cracking everyday value.
Vineyard & Winery
Viticulture & Terroir:
The fruit is sourced from established bush and trellised Chenin Blanc vineyards planted in the weathered granite soils of Stellenbosch and Agter-Paarl. These ancient, mineral-rich soils drain well while forcing the vine roots deep underground in search of moisture during dry spells. Warm, sun-drenched days develop ripe stone fruit flavours, while cool maritime breezes rolling off the Atlantic preserve the grape’s natural, mouthwatering acidity. Canopies are managed carefully without leaf stripping, shading the fruit from harsh afternoon sun to keep aromatics crisp and fresh.
Winemaking & Maturation:
Grapes were harvested in the cool morning hours at optimal ripeness to retain aromatic purity. Following gentle destemming and pressing, the juice was cold-fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks between 12°C and 14°C to lock in primary fruit aromatics. After fermentation, the wine remained on its gross lees for four months, stirred once a week (batônnage) with minimal sulphur to build body and savoury mouthfeel without introducing wood flavours. Filtered and bottled fresh under screwcap.
