Tasting Notes & Pairing Suggestions
Pours a delicate, pale salmon-pink with an energetic, long-lasting stream of fine bubbles. On the nose, it opens with clean, inviting aromas of fresh wild strawberries, crunchy redcurrant, and ripe spiced peach, layered with subtle undertones of cherry blossom and a whisper of warm brioche from bottle ageing.
On the palate, it delivers a lovely balance between generous summer fruit and bright, mouthwatering acidity. Mouthfuls of ripe raspberry cream, red apple, and pink grapefruit zest coat the mouth without feeling heavy, carried effortlessly by a soft, creamy mousse. The finish is dry, crisp, and refreshingly clean, leaving lingering notes of tart red berries and citrus pith.
Food Pairings:
Built for easy drinking as a party fizz it is also very food friendly. It cuts brilliantly through the batter of a Friday fish supper or a plate of crisp tempura prawns. It is equally at home alongside hot-smoked Scottish salmon, seared tuna steaks, or a fresh beetroot and goat’s cheese salad. If you are keeping things casual, crack it open with salted crisps, mild charcuterie, or sushi.
About the Producer
Old Road Wine Co. is based in Franschhoek, right in the historic heartland of South Africa's winelands. Founded by a passionate collective of wine veterans led by Tim Hutchinson the outfit takes its inspiration from the characters, stories, and tradespeople who walked the town's original main road and built its rich wine heritage.
Rather than chasing fleeting cellar trends or charging overinflated prices, Old Road Wine Co. focuses on honest craft, ethical farming, and championing prized pockets of older vines across the Western Cape. Their winemaking team, headed by Ryan Puttick, produces unpretentious, terroir-driven bottles made to be enjoyed around a bustling dinner table rather than left collecting dust on an ornamental shelf.
Vineyard & Winery
Viticulture & Terroir:
The fruit for Gorgeous Sparkling is sourced from select cool-climate parcels across the Western Cape, primarily situated on weathered granite and shale slopes. These soils encourage the vines to burrow deep in search of nutrients, yielding fruit with natural concentration and fresh mineral drive. The proximity to the Atlantic coast brings cooling afternoon sea breezes, moderating the warm sunshine and extending the ripening period. This slow maturation locks in crisp natural acidity and bright berry aromatics while keeping sugar levels naturally low—ideal for crafting benchmark sparkling wine.
Winemaking & Maturation:
Crafted using traditional Méthode Cap Classique (the identical bottle-fermentation technique honed in Champagne). The Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and small proportion of Pinotage grapes were hand-harvested early in the morning and pressed separately as whole bunches. Only the delicate free-run and gentle cuvée press juice was selected to preserve pristine aromatics and prevent astringency.
After temperature-controlled base fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was blended and bottled for its secondary fermentation in the cellar. It rested on its fine yeast lees to develop its signature creamy texture and subtle bready notes before disgorgement and a balanced, dry dosage. Bottled using vegan-friendly fining methods.
