Tasting Notes & Serving Suggestions
Pours a bright, polished amber with warm copper glints in the glass. The nose opens with an inviting lift of passion fruit, ripe banana, and candied lemon peel, anchored by salted caramel, toasted coconut flake, and vanilla pod. As it breathes, subtle undertones of freshly grated nutmeg and aged pipe tobacco emerge.
On the palate, it delivers medium weight and wonderful balance at 46.5% ABV. Juicy layers of guava, sun-dried apricot, and sultana arrive first, followed by sweet baking spice, honeycomb, and a delicate floral hint of rose water. The finish is persistent, clean, and dry, tapering off with fine French oak tannins, cracked black pepper, bergamot, and warming Ceylon black tea.
Serving Suggestions:
Bottled at a well-judged 46.5% ABV, this vintage expression is built for unhurried sipping. Pour a neat dram into a tulip-shaped glass or copita at room temperature, giving it five minutes in the glass to open up its exotic tropical aromatics. If you like to soften the spirit, a single drop of spring water works wonders to release extra floral sweetness.
About the Producer
Overseen by master blender Alexandre Gabriel and the Maison Ferrand team, Planteray Rum (formerly Plantation Rum) is celebrated worldwide for celebrating regional rum traditions while perfecting the historic French craft of dynamic double-ageing.
With their limited Terravera Vintage Collection, Planteray turns its focus towards singular island terroirs that rarely get the spotlight they deserve. For this 2013 bottling, Gabriel partnered with the Medine Distillery—established in 1926 along the sunny western coast of Mauritius near Flic-en-Flac. Surrounded by volcanic mountain slopes and sugarcane fields, Medine holds nearly a century of continuous distilling heritage, capturing the pure, sun-drenched spirit of the Indian Ocean.
Production & Maturation
Distillation & Fermentation:
Distilled in 2013 from locally grown Mauritian sugarcane molasses. Following a controlled 2-day fermentation to preserve lively aromatic fruit esters (volatile compounds: 278 g/hL AA; esters: 69 g/hL AA), the wash was distilled through a continuous traditional column still to produce a crisp, aromatic, and fruit-forward spirit.
Two-Climate Double Maturation:
A limited parcel of only 19 casks was selected for this release, undergoing Planteray’s signature dual-climate maturation:
Tropical Ageing (9 Years): The rum rested for nine full years on the island of Mauritius in 200-litre ex-bourbon American oak casks at the distillery in Flic-en-Flac. The warm maritime climate accelerated interaction between wood and spirit, developing rich core notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and dark caramel.
Continental Ageing (2 Years): The rum was shipped across the oceans to the temperate cellars of Maison Ferrand in Javrezac, south-west France. Here, it spent a further two years rounding out in seasoned 350-litre French oak Ferrand Cognac casks, imparting silky structure, fine wood tannins, and notes of dried tea and citrus peel. Bottled with a light 4.5 g/L dosage and no added artificial caramel colouring.
