Ponte del Diavolo Pinot Grigio features light and bright lemon colour with a lively, freshly cut pear and almond aroma. Structured, with a medium weighted body, this wine offers a balanced taste of ripe pears, sherbet and a touch of nuttiness, all backed by the characteristic freshness of Friulian wines.

About the Producer

This is an area in which we had struggled to find the wine we wanted so decided to bring in Andrea Morlin to work alongside Alana McGettigan and Matt Thomson. The wines are made on the well-drained soils of Grave del Friuli and are fuller than those from Verona. The Ponte del Diavolo wines take their name from the spectacular medieval bridge in nearby Cividale. The story goes that the devil struck a bargain with the townspeople, promising to make them a bridge in return for the soul of the first living thing to cross it. The cunning citizens sent a dog or cat across, depending on the variation of the story, thereby saving themselves and gaining a wonderful bridge.

Vineyard and Winery

Vineyards for this wine are located in Grave del Friuli, in the southern part of Friuli. The vines are grown on alluvial plains with stony soils with a high limestone content. The vines are Guyot trained and yields are lower than average, producing grapes with great concentration of flavour balanced by a refreshing acidity.

The grapes were machine harvested. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were gently pressed in a pneumatic press to extract a very clear juice. Temperature-controlled fermentation using selected yeasts took place in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures of between 18-20°C to preserve the perfume and bright fruit flavours of the Pinot Grigio. No oak was used during the winemaking process and the wine remained in tank on the fine lees until bottling. The wine was sealed under screwcap to preserve freshness and eliminate the risk of cork taint.

Great wine, great service

This is a lovely wine first sampled in Cornwall and available through various retailers on line. Aitken's provided a fantastic service and the wine was delivered promptly, unlike some other retailers! The wine is so popular that we could only buy the 5 that were available.
