Tasting Notes & Serving Suggestions

Pours a polished copper with a natural, unadjusted hue. On the nose, dense coal smoke and coastal sea spray collide with sweet, unctuous notes of smoked damson jam, blackcurrant, dried orange peel, and liquorice.

On the palate, it delivers serious weight without burning out the flavours. Mouth-coating and oily, the spirit reveals rich dark chocolate-covered cherries, charred barbecue embers, and spiced fruitcake, underpinned by savoury peat and roasted nuts. The finish is persistent, warming, and herbal, leaving trailing notes of cocoa nibs, cracked black pepper, and dried mint.

Serving Suggestions & Pairings:

Best enjoyed neat in your favourite whisky glass, or with a splash of soft water to open up the herbal aromatics and temper the 50.5% ABV. At the table, this cuts straight through rich, savoury scran: try it alongside Dundee haggis, venison sausages, or braised ox cheek. If you have a sweet tooth, a square of high-cocoa dark chocolate or a slice of rich fruit loaf works a treat.

About the Producer

Port Askaig is an independent bottling range developed by Elixir Distillers, an outfit co-founded by Sukhinder and Rajbir Singh that has earned deep respect across the Scotch whisky world for unpretentious, flavour-led cask selection. Rather than hiding behind pomp and circumstance, the Port Askaig label was created to bottle classic Islay character at its most honest and unadorned.

Taking its name from the historic ferry port tucked into the sound between Islay and Jura, the brand sources single malts from north-eastern Islay distilleries known for their clean, maritime peat profiles. Every batch is bottled without chill filtration or artificial colouring, letting the raw distillery character and good oak do all the heavy lifting.

Distillation & Maturation

Production & Spirit:

Sourced from an undisclosed distillery near the coastal port of Askaig, the spirit carries the classic northern Islay signature of clean, phenolic peat smoke balanced by vibrant maritime freshness.

Cask Selection & Maturation:

This expression is batched from just 20 Oloroso sherry butts sourced directly from the storied José y Miguel Martín cooperage and bodega in Jerez, Spain. Unlike overly cloying Pedro Ximénez finishes, these seasoned European oak butts impart dry, nut-driven spice, cocoa, and dark berry notes without overwhelming the underlying peat. Bottled at a generous 50.5% ABV without chill filtration or artificial caramel colouring, keeping every trace of natural cask oils firmly in the bottle.
