Tasting Notes & Pairing Suggestions
This vibrant Simonsig Chenin Blanc displays a brilliant clear colour with a green tinge. A burst of tropical fruit aromas ranging from melon, passion fruit and pear to fresh lime. A well-structured palate with layers of citrus and tropical fruits. Refreshing acidity and good length makes this an exceptional summer wine. A true expression of Simonsig terroir.
Beetroot and citrus salad with goat’s cheese, steamed mussels with a garlic cream sauce, whole chicken on the fire with root vegetables and, if all else fails, just on its own for pure enjoyment.
About the Producer
Named after its dramatic views of the Simonsberg Mountain, the estate is situated in Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s premier wine regions, 45 km east of Cape Town. At the helm are the Malan family, descendants of the French Huguenot Jacques Malan who first arrived in the Cape in 1688, although it was the late Frans Malan who pioneered much of what the company stands for today. The Malan family are one of South Africa’s most reputable wine producers. The three Malan brothers have passionate commitment towards quality and innovation. Simonsig wines are sold in more than 40 countries world-wide, including the United Kingdom, USA and Kenya.
Vineyard & Winery
Viticulture & Terroir:
The fruit is grown on estate vineyards in the renowned Stellenbosch district, roughly 45 kilometres east of Cape Town. Soils here are ancient and varied, predominantly weathered granite and sandstone with good water-holding clay subsoils that sustain the vines during dry summer spells. The Mediterranean climate is tempered by cooling maritime breezes rolling in off False Bay, slowing the ripening process and preserving the pristine natural acidity and bright aromatics that define top-tier Cape Chenin.
Winemaking & Maturation:
Grapes were harvested by hand in the cool early hours to protect pure varietal aromatics. Following destemming and gentle crushing, select parcels were given overnight skin contact to build subtle texture and aromatic depth. The juice was cold-settled to brilliant clarity before undergoing temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel between 12°C and 14°C using yeasts selected to accentuate vibrant fruit purity. The wine remained entirely unwooded, resting on its fine lees for several months to build a supple mid-palate feel without dulling its crisp, fresh-fruited core. Bottled using vegan-friendly fining agents.
