About the Producer
Tohu produces award-winning New Zealand wines crafted from grapes grown in the breathtakingly beautiful, Awatere Valley vineyard. When Tohu launched in 1998 they were the world's first Māori-owned wine company. Since then they have grown a reputation for producing premium wine in a range of varieties, winning awards for their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Méthode Traditionnelle fizz.
Vineyard and Winery
The Awatere Valley is located in the North of the South Island in Marlborough. The various blocks from the Whenua Awa vineyard used for this wine are: Araroa, Moana, Rotokaro, Taumauri and Tohu. All planted in 2002 and measuring 19.22 ha of loam soils varying from shallow to deep silt and fine sand.
Hand-harvested grapes gently destemmed then chilled for seven days in open top vessels. These tanks are then warmed for a fast ferment; the wine was pressed directly into dedicated Pinot Noir French oak barriques for the winter with malolactic fermentation occurring once the temperatures warmed up again for the Spring. The winemakers the went through the rigorous blending and barrel section, with the final blend left to settle for a few more months before being bottled without the need for fining or filtration.
