Maison Trénel Morgon Côte du Py reveals an intense ruby colour and a complex nose combining mineral notes of flint and ink with fruity aromas of raspberry jam, black cherry, and morello cherry, accented by clove and black pepper spices. On the palate, it offers a full, dense structure with a distinctive minerality characteristic of Côte du Py, finishing long and refined. Best served at 15°-16°C, this wine pairs beautifully with roast rack of veal, prime rib, or truffled Brillat-Savarin. It has an aging potential of 7 to 15 years, rewarding patience with evolving complexity.

About the Producer

Founded in 1928 by Henri Claudius Trénel, Maison Trénel is one of the most ancient and well-known houses of the Beaujolais and the Macon wine regions of France. For nearly a century, the house has had the great fortune of working with vineyards which are superbly situated and judiciously farmed. These vines consistently yield very high-quality fruit. For example, some of the vines for Trénel’s Beaujolais-Villages are upwards of 60 years of age.

Maison Trénel is guided by the principles of authenticity of fruit, and authenticity of terroir. The house has always strived to produce wines and fruit liqueurs that exemplify the purest expression of their origins. This sentiment is born from a love of the land, as well as a deep respect and continued practice of Burgundian traditions. It also informs the house’s work ethic, written in Latin and evidenced on Maison Trénel’s emblem: Bene Facit Id Quod Bene Amat, or “…we can only succeed at that which we know well, and love.”

In 2015 Maison Trénel was bought by M. CHAPOUTIER to renew focus on highlighting the differences between different vineyard sites and terroirs, the wines from Maison Trénel continue to reach even greater heights.

Vineyard and Winery

Vines with an average age of 55 are grown at the heart of this Beaujolais crus, the Morgon appellation.  The soils consist of decomposed schists and very old eruptive rocks. The vines are typically south-facing for the premium aspect soaking up the sun. The region is dominated by the Mont du Py, whose very dark soil made from decomposed schist gives the wine particular aromas, which are why it is called "Morgonne". The Mont du Py is a  small, perfectly rounded hill, culminating at an altitude of 300m.

Maceration of 50% destemmed grapes for 21 days. Aged in concrete vats. No fining. Light filtration.
