Tasting Notes & Food Pairings
Pours a bright, deep ruby-red with purple glints at the rim. The nose is pure, youthful, and immediately welcoming, offering fragrant aromas of dark cherries, crushed blackberries, and wild plums layered with hints of dried rosemary, violet, and a gentle touch of savoury graphite minerality.
On the palate, it strikes a terrific balance between generous coastal Tuscan fruit and genuine drinkability. Because it is vinified and matured entirely without oak influence, the fruit stays vivid and crunchy: dark brambles, ripe blackcurrant, and sour cherry take centre stage, supported by fine-grained, supple tannins and a clean, saline freshness that keeps every sip lively. The finish is clean, dry, and appetising, lingering with a pinch of cracked black pepper and wild scrub.
Food Pairings:
This is an honest, food-friendly red built for casual mid-week dinners and Sunday gatherings alike. It is superb alongside classic slow-simmered bolognese or ragù tagliatelle, grilled Italian pork sausages with roasted peppers, or a hearty Shepherd’s pie. For an easy supper, pour a glass with a wood-fired margherita pizza or a wedge of mature Pecorino Toscano.
About the Producer
Tringali-Casanuova (operating under the estate name PietraNova) is one of the most storied, intimate properties in Castagneto Carducci. While Bolgheri is often associated with modern, corporate "Super Tuscan" estates, the roots of this estate trace back all the way to 1698, when Count Guido Alberto della Gherardesca granted the historic "Casa al Piano" estate and farmhouse to the Tringali-Casanuova family for their long-standing service to the community.
Today, the family tends roughly 5.5 hectares of prime vineyards alongside five hectares of heritage olive groves. Rather than pursuing heavy extraction or oak-drenched showstoppers, their ethos focuses on genuine terroir expression, approachable drinkability, and meticulous vineyard care that lets the warmth of coastal Tuscany speak honestly in the glass.
Vineyard & Winery
Viticulture & Terroir:
The fruit is grown in the prestigious coastal hills of Castagneto Carducci within the Bolgheri DOC. The vines—planted around the year 2000 at a density of 5,500 plants per hectare—are trained via spurred cordon and Guyot. Rooted in deep, loose, gravel-rich soils that provide outstanding natural drainage, the vines are forced to dig deep for nourishment. The mesoclimate here is ideal: sheltered to the east by the Colline Metallifere and exposed to cooling maritime breezes sweeping in off the Tyrrhenian Sea, preserving bright natural acidity during the warm Tuscan summer days.
Winemaking & Maturation:
Grapes are hand-harvested from mid-September to early October with careful sorting in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats at 28°C to extract vibrant colour and pure, aromatic fruit character without harsh astringency. Malolactic fermentation is completed in the same tanks. Crucially, the Casa al Piano cuvée is aged entirely in stainless steel vats and bottle prior to release, deliberately eschewing barrique ageing to safeguard the wine's crunchy fruit purity, refreshing balance, and immediate appeal.
