Giffard Cocktail Liqueurs and Ingredients
It all started during the very hot summer of 1885...
Emile Giffard was a pharmacist in Angers, in the Loire Valley, but a pharmacist like no other. A curious inventor and gourmet, he carried out research on the digestive system and the refreshing properties of mint. From this research he developed a pure, transparent, refined, white mint liqueur which he trialled with customers of the neighboring Grand Hôtel to relieve them from the heat. Emile then transformed his pharmacy into a distillery and named his liqueur Menthe-Pastille, in reference to the mints that were very popular at that time.
Five generations later, the Giffard company, still family-run, produces Menthe-Pastille, Crèmes de fruits, Liqueurs, Guignolets and Syrups, respecting the quality that has driven it from the start.
Plants are the basis of their inspiration and they have always been committed to finding the most refined ingredients, the most flavoursome fruit, and the most aromatic plants in order to create Giffard liqueurs and syrups. With this in mind Giffard are partnering with the mostly local farmers to promote biodiversity, pollination etc and have signed multi-year contracts with these local producers.
65% of their purchases of fruits and plants come from French producers. They promote a pleasant working environment: plenty of green spaces, natural light, large openings into their gardens and limits on noise pollution.
On top of this they use renewable energy with solar panels on the roof of the factory producing 20% of their electricity needs. They have overseen a reduction in water consumption and increased recycling.
- The bottles contain 70% recycled glass
- A reduction in the weight of glass bottles sees a decrease in CO2 production and makes a positive impact on transport weight and cost.
